The King of the North and the South
(Daniel 11:1-45)
The angel gave Daniel a vision of a great war. Two powerful kingdoms would fight against each other. The king of the South would grow strong, but the king of the North would become even stronger. They would battle for many years, and many people would die in the fighting.
The king of the South would march with a huge army. He would try to defeat the king of the North. But the king of the North would attack back with even more soldiers. He would capture the strongest cities. He would take treasures of gold and silver. He would carry away the people as prisoners.
A mighty king would rise up and do whatever he pleased. He would destroy many things. He would speak against the God of gods. He would do this for a time, and times, and half a time. He would not respect the gods of his fathers. He would honor a god of fortresses instead. He would build strong walls and towers. He would place his own palace between the seas and the beautiful holy mountain.
This proud king would attack many countries. Ships from the coastlands would come against him. Then he would be troubled and would turn back. He would pitch his royal tents between the sea and the mountain. But there would be no one to help him.
Daniel saw all of this happen before it ever took place. God showed him the future so people would know that God rules over all the kings of the earth. None of these powerful rulers could stop what God had planned. The kings would fight, but God was above every throne and every army.
God told Daniel about these battles to prove that He is the one true God. He knows everything that will happen. He is never surprised. The kings of the earth may think they are in charge, but they are only doing what God allows. God's people can trust Him even when they see powerful enemies all around them. God has a plan, and He will finish it. No army can stand against the Lord of heaven.
