Daniel Sees a Heavenly Messenger
(Daniel 10:1-21)
In the third year of Cyrus, king of Persia, a man named Daniel received a message from God. Daniel was a wise and faithful man who served God all his life. He understood that the vision was about a great war that would happen in the future. Daniel spent three weeks mourning and fasting. He ate no rich food, tasted no meat or wine, and used no lotions on his body. He was very sad and wanted to understand what God was showing him.
On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, Daniel stood by the great Tigris River. As he looked up, he saw a man dressed in linen clothes. The man wore a belt of pure gold around his waist. His body sparkled like a precious gem, like beryl. His face shone like lightning, and his eyes blazed like flaming torches. His arms and legs looked like polished bronze. His voice sounded like the roar of a huge crowd of people.
Daniel was terrified. He fell face down on the ground. The men who were with him did not see the vision, but they felt great fear. They ran away and hid themselves. Daniel was left alone, shaking with fright. He had no strength left in his body. His face turned pale, and he could barely breathe.
Then the glorious man spoke to Daniel. He said, "Daniel, you are greatly loved by God. Do not be afraid. Stand up, for I have been sent to you." When Daniel heard these words, he stood up, still trembling. The heavenly messenger told Daniel that from the very first day Daniel had humbled himself to understand the vision, God had heard his prayers. The messenger had been sent immediately to answer him.
But there was a great battle in the heavens. The prince of the Persian kingdom fought against the messenger for twenty-one days. That is why it took so long for the messenger to arrive. Finally, Michael, one of the chief princes of heaven, came to help him. Michael is a mighty angel who fights for God's people. The messenger then told Daniel what would happen to his people in the future. He said, "Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the days to come."
When the messenger finished speaking, Daniel bowed down again. Then a figure who looked like a son of man touched Daniel's lips and gave him strength. The messenger told Daniel, "Do not be afraid, you who are greatly loved. Peace be with you. Be strong." Daniel received new strength and said, "Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me." The messenger then revealed what was written in the book of truth about the future wars and struggles God's people would face. Daniel saw that God rules over all the kingdoms of the earth and that He has a plan that will never fail.

This story points forward to Jesus Christ, our great heavenly messenger. Just as the angel came to strengthen Daniel and reveal God's plans, Jesus came to earth to show us the Father's heart and to defeat our greatest enemy. Jesus fought the ultimate battle against sin and death on the cross. He did not fight against an earthly king but against the powers of darkness. And Jesus won the victory for us. In Hebrews 1, we learn that Jesus is far greater than any angel. He is the Son of God who came to save His people and give them strength for every trial.

- When you pray, keep praying. Daniel prayed for three weeks before he got his answer. Sometimes God answers right away, and sometimes He asks us to keep trusting Him. Do not give up.
- Remember that God loves you. The angel called Daniel "greatly loved." God loves you that much too. When you feel scared or weak, remember that God sees you and cares for you.
- Be brave because God is with you. Daniel was terrified, but God strengthened him. When you face hard things at school or home, ask God to make you strong like He did for Daniel.

Heavenly Messenger Scroll
Kids will create a scroll that looks like the "book of truth" mentioned in Daniel 10, with special messages from God on it.
Materials Checklist:
- Cut a piece of white paper into a long rectangle, about 8 inches wide and 12 inches long.
- Cut two pieces of brown paper bag into rectangles that are slightly wider than your white paper.
- Use markers to write "Book of Truth" at the top of your white paper. Then write or draw three things God wants you to know: "God loves you," "Do not be afraid," and "Be strong."
- Glue one brown rectangle to the left side of your white paper and the other to the right side. These are your scroll handles.
- Roll the brown paper handles inward from both sides until they meet in the middle. Tie a piece of yarn around the rolled scroll to keep it closed.
- Unroll your scroll and read the truths God gave to you.

For Younger Children: Focus on the angel's appearance and Daniel's fear. Use simple words like "shiny," "bright," and "scared." Let them draw a picture of the angel instead of making the scroll if time is short. Whisper the scary parts and get louder for the good news.
