Daniel’s Vision of the Ram and the Goat
(Daniel 8)
Daniel was living in a foreign land far from his home in Jerusalem. He was a servant to the king of Babylon. One night, God gave Daniel a vision. In this vision, Daniel saw himself standing beside the Ulai River in the city of Susa. He looked up and saw a ram with two long horns. One horn was taller than the other, but the taller one grew up later. Daniel watched as the ram pushed its way west, north, and south. No other animal could stand in its way. The ram did whatever it wanted and became very great.
As Daniel was thinking about the ram, a male goat suddenly appeared. The goat came from the west so fast that it seemed to fly over the ground without touching it. The goat had a large, noticeable horn between its eyes. The goat ran straight at the ram with great rage. It struck the ram with fury and broke off both of its horns. The ram had no power to fight back. The goat knocked the ram to the ground and trampled on it. No one could save the ram.
The male goat grew very powerful. But at the height of its strength, the large horn suddenly broke off. In its place, four other horns grew up. From one of those four horns came a small horn that grew in power toward the south, the east, and the Beautiful Land. The little horn set itself up against the Commander of heaven's army. It took away the daily sacrifices and threw down God's sanctuary. It attacked the truth and prospered in everything it did.
Then Daniel heard two holy angels talking. One asked, "How long will this vision continue? How long will the daily sacrifices be stopped?" The other answered, "It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be made clean again."
Daniel wanted to understand this vision. Suddenly, someone like a man stood in front of him. Daniel heard a voice call out, "Gabriel, tell Daniel the meaning of the vision!" Gabriel came near and Daniel fell face down on the ground. Gabriel touched him and lifted him up. Gabriel explained that the ram with two horns stood for the kings of Media and Persia. The goat was the king of Greece. The large horn was the first king of Greece, and the four horns were four kingdoms that would follow. The fierce king who attacked God's people would one day be defeated. Daniel was worn out by what he saw. He lay sick for days and was deeply troubled because he did not fully understand it all.

Jesus Connection
Gabriel told Daniel that a fierce king would stand up against the Prince of princes (Daniel 8:25). The Prince of princes is a title that points forward to Jesus, the true King of kings. In the vision, this enemy was broken without human hands. This reminds us of a much bigger victory. Jesus defeated sin and death at the cross and by rising from the grave. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15 that the last enemy to be destroyed is death itself. What the vision only hinted at, Jesus accomplished in full. He is the ultimate Prince who rules over all kings and kingdoms.

- Trust God's Plan: When you don't understand what's happening in the world or in your life, remember that God knows the whole picture. He is in control.
- Be Patient with Mysteries: Some things in the Bible are hard to understand. It is okay to say, "I don't get it, but I still trust God." Daniel was confused, but he kept serving God.
- Look for Jesus: The whole Bible points to Jesus. When you read about a king or a prince in the Old Testament, ask yourself, "How does this show me something about Jesus?"

How to Make the Vision Storyboard:- Fold a piece of paper in half, then in half again to make four sections.
- In the first section, draw the ram with two horns, pushing west, north, and south.
- In the second section, draw the male goat with the large horn, attacking the ram.

- In the final section, draw Gabriel helping Daniel understand the vision.
