The Vision of Four Beasts
(Daniel 7)
One night, King Nebuchadnezzar's grandson, King Belshazzar, was having a big feast. But far away, a man named Daniel was lying in his bed. Daniel was an old man now, but he still loved and served God. While he slept, God gave him a strange and powerful dream, a vision that showed what would happen in the future.
In his vision, Daniel saw the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. Then four huge beasts came up out of the water, each different from the others. The first looked like a lion with eagle's wings. Daniel watched as its wings were torn off, and it stood up on two feet like a man and was given a human heart. The second beast looked like a bear, raised up on one side with three ribs in its mouth. A voice said to it, "Get up and eat your fill of flesh!" The third beast looked like a leopard with four wings and four heads, and it was given authority to rule.
Then Daniel saw the fourth beast. It was terrifying and powerful, with large iron teeth that crushed everything in its path, and it had ten horns. As Daniel stared at the horns, a little horn grew up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled up by the roots to make room for it. This little horn had eyes like a man's eyes and a mouth that spoke great boasting words.
Daniel kept watching as thrones were set in place. The Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was white like snow, and the hair of his head was like pure wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and a river of fire flowed out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him, the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
Daniel watched the little horn speak its boasts. Then he saw the fourth beast killed, its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. The authority of the other beasts was taken away, though they were allowed to live for a time and a season.
Then Daniel saw one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory, and sovereign power. All peoples, nations, and men of every language worshiped him. His rule is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Daniel was deeply troubled by all this, and he asked one of those standing nearby to explain the vision. He was told that the four beasts represent four kings who will rise from the earth, but the holy people of the Most High will receive the kingdom and possess it forever. Daniel saw the Son of Man receive an everlasting kingdom that would never end. God showed him that no matter what earthly kings do, he is the one who is truly in charge, and his kingdom will last forever.
