Nothing Can Separate Us From God's Love
(Romans 8:31-39)
Imagine you are standing in a courtroom. You have done something wrong, and the judge is about to say your punishment. But then, someone steps forward. This person is your friend, and he says, "I will take the punishment for him. Set him free." That is what Jesus did for us. He took our punishment on the cross so that we could be forgiven.
But what if someone else came into the courtroom later and said, "Wait a minute! That person is still guilty! He should still be punished!" The judge would say, "No, the punishment has already been paid. The case is closed." That is what Paul is telling us in Romans 8. God Himself has declared us "not guilty" because of Jesus. So who can say we are guilty? No one!
Paul wrote these words to the believers in Rome. They were facing hard times. Some of them were being made fun of. Some were even being hurt or thrown in prison because they loved Jesus. They probably felt scared and alone at times. Paul wanted them to know that nothing could ever take away God's love for them. He wanted them to be brave and strong.
Paul asked a big question: "If God is for us, who can be against us?" Think about that. The God who made the entire universe, who holds every star in place, who knows every hair on your head - this God is on your side! He gave up His own Son, Jesus, to save us. If God gave us the very best gift He had, won't He also take care of everything else we need? Paul said yes! God will give us all good things.
Paul knew that people might try to say bad things about us. We might make mistakes. But God has already chosen us and made us His children. Jesus died for us, and He is even praying for us right now in heaven. So who can judge us? No one! Jesus is the one who died and rose again. He is the judge, and He says we are forgiven.
Paul then made a list of all the scary things that could happen. He said, "I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." That is a long list! Paul was saying that nothing in the whole world can make God stop loving us.
Think about that. Not even death - the scariest thing of all - can separate us from God's love. Not even the devil and his angels. Not even today's troubles or tomorrow's worries. Not even the highest mountain or the deepest ocean. Nothing. Not one single thing. We are held tight in God's love, and He will never let us go.
Paul wanted every believer to know this deep in their hearts. When they felt weak, they could remember that God was strong. When they felt afraid, they could remember that God was with them. When they felt unloved, they could remember that God's love never runs out. And the same is true for us today. No matter what happens, we are safe in God's love forever.
A Curious Question
Why do you think Paul made a whole list of scary things like death and angels and mountains and oceans to say that none of them can separate us from God's love?
Old Testament Connection
In the Old Testament, God's people often felt like they were alone or forgotten. They faced enemies and hard times. But God always reminded them that He loved them and would never leave them. One of the most famous Old Testament stories is about David and Goliath. David was just a young boy, but he trusted God. The giant Goliath was huge and scary, but David said, "The battle is the Lord's!" He knew that God was with him, so he did not have to be afraid.
David wrote many songs, or psalms, about God's love. In Psalm 23, he said, "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." David knew what Paul knew: God is always with His people. But Paul knew something even bigger. He knew that Jesus had come to earth and died for our sins. Jesus rose again and showed that nothing - not even death - can beat God's love. Jesus is the ultimate reason we can be sure that God will never leave us. He already showed us the greatest love possible by giving His life for us.

1. Paul said, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" What does it mean that God is "for us," and how does that make you feel?
2. Paul listed some really scary things like death and rulers and powers. Why do you think he chose those things to talk about when he was telling people about God's love?
3. Why is it so important to know that nothing can separate us from God's love? How does that change the way we live each day?
So What? What Can I Do?
- Remember God is for you. When you feel scared or sad, whisper to yourself, "God is on my side. He loves me and He is with me."
- Pray about your fears. Just like Paul talked about scary things, you can tell God about the things that make you afraid. Ask Him to help you trust His love.
- Share this good news. When you see a friend who is worried or upset, tell them what Paul said. Tell them that God's love never stops, even when things are hard.

Materials Checklist
How to Make the Nothing Can Separate Us Poster:
- Write "Nothing Can Separate Us From God's Love - Romans 8:38-39" in big letters at the top of your poster board.
- Under the title, draw a large heart in the center of the paper.
- Around the heart, draw and color pictures of things that might make people feel scared or alone. For example: a storm cloud, a big mountain, a dark cave, a scary shadow, or waves of water.
- Cut out small cross shapes and heart stickers. Glue them inside the big heart on your poster.
- Write the words "God's Love" inside the heart, right on top of the crosses and hearts.
- Decorate the rest of the poster with colorful stars and the words "Jesus Is With Me!"
- Hang your poster somewhere you can see it every day to remind you that God's love never lets you go.
Effective Teaching Techniques
For Younger Children: Use the hand motions for the memory verse slowly and repeat each motion several times. Let them draw their own poster pictures on smaller paper if poster board feels too big. Encourage them to describe their feelings with simple words like "happy" or "scared."
Prep Shortcut: Pre-cut the cross shapes and hearts so younger kids can glue them directly onto the poster without needing scissors. Write the key words "God's Love" in a large, clear font on a separate strip for them to paste inside the heart.
Classroom Management: When discussing the curious question, invite children to act out the scary things Paul listed (death, life, angels, rulers). This will help them burn off energy while staying engaged in the lesson. Remind them to use quiet voices during the memory verse motions.
For Older Kids: Challenge them to write their own list of "scary things" that might make them feel separated from God. Then have them pair up and read Romans 8:38-39 aloud to each other as a declaration of faith.
