God's Amazing Righteousness Through Faith in Jesus
(Romans 3:21-31)

Paul wrote a letter to the Christians living in Rome. Rome was a big city, the center of the Roman Empire. The church there included both Jewish believers and Gentile believers. Paul wanted them to understand the most important truth about how anyone can be made right with God.

Paul started by explaining the bad news. Everyone has sinned. Sin is not just doing bad things; it is missing the mark of God's perfect standard. Every person, no matter how good they try to be, has fallen short of God's glory. The Jewish people had the Law of Moses. They knew the Ten Commandments and all the rules God gave. But even they could not keep the Law perfectly. The Law actually showed them how sinful they were. It was like a spotlight that revealed their sin. The Gentiles, who did not have the Law, still sinned because they disobeyed what God had written on their hearts. So both Jews and Gentiles were in the same boat—all guilty before God.

But then Paul shared the wonderful good news. The righteousness of God has now been revealed. This righteousness does not come from keeping the Law. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ. God sent His own Son, Jesus, to be the sacrifice for our sins. Jesus died on the cross and shed His blood to pay the penalty for sin. When we put our faith in Jesus, God credits His righteousness to us. It is like a legal transaction: our sin is placed on Jesus, and His perfect righteousness is placed on us. We are declared not guilty. We are justified—made right with God.

Paul used a strong word: propitiation. That means Jesus turned away God's anger against sin. God's wrath against sin was poured out on Jesus instead of on us. God did this to demonstrate that He is both just and the justifier. He is just because He punished sin. And He is the justifier because He freely gives righteousness to everyone who believes.

This gift is free. It is by God's grace, not by our works. No one can boast about earning salvation. It is not about how many good deeds we do or how many rules we follow. It is all about faith in Jesus. Paul asked: Is God the God of the Jews only? No, He is the God of the Gentiles too. There is only one God, and He saves all who believe, whether they are Jews or Gentiles.

What about the Law then? Does faith make the Law useless? Paul said, Absolutely not! Faith does not cancel the Law. Instead, faith upholds the Law. The Law was never meant to save us. It was meant to show us our sin and drive us to Jesus. Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly. When we believe in Him, His righteousness fulfills the Law for us. So the Law is not thrown away; it is honored and established through faith.

This is the heart of the gospel: we are made right with God not by what we do, but by what Jesus has done for us. We receive this gift by faith alone. And this is for everyone—Jews, Gentiles, men, women, children—all who believe in Jesus. That is the best news anyone could ever hear.

Old Testament Connection

The Old Testament Law and the Prophets both pointed to this truth. The Law showed that all people are sinners and cannot save themselves. The Prophets spoke of a coming Messiah who would bring righteousness and salvation. Jesus is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. He lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose again. When we put our faith in Him, His righteousness becomes ours. This is what the Old Testament was always pointing toward: Jesus Christ, the one who makes us right with God.

So What? What Can I Do?

  • Trust Jesus alone. Stop trying to earn God's approval by being good. Instead, put your faith in Jesus and what He did for you.
  • Thank God for His free gift. Every day, thank God that He gives you righteousness through faith, not because you deserve it.
  • Tell others. Share the good news that anyone can be made right with God by believing in Jesus.

How to Make the Righteousness Robe:

  1. Cut out a robe shape from white paper or fabric.
  2. Decorate the robe with markers or crayons. You can write "RIGHTEOUSNESS" on the front.
  3. Add stickers or foam shapes to make it beautiful.
  4. As you work, remember that Jesus gives us His righteousness as a free gift.

Effective Teaching Techniques

For Younger Children: Use simple analogies. Compare sin to a stain on a white shirt that only Jesus can wash away. Use the robe craft to help them visualize being clothed in righteousness.

Prep Shortcut: Pre-cut the robe shapes before class so the children can focus on decorating and discussing the meaning.

Classroom Management: Keep the discussion moving. Ask the questions and give children time to think before calling on someone to answer.

For Older Kids: Challenge them to explain the difference between earning salvation and receiving it as a gift. Have them look up Romans 3:23-24 in their own Bibles.
