Jesus Heals the Man with Leprosy
(Matthew 7:28-8:3)

After Jesus finished sharing God's truth on the mountainside, the crowds were amazed. They had never heard anyone teach like him. Jesus did not just quote other teachers. He spoke with his own authority. The people knew something special was happening. As Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him everywhere.

Then something unexpected happened. A man with a terrible skin disease called leprosy came to Jesus. In those days, people with leprosy had to stay far away from others. They had to shout "Unclean, unclean" so no one would come near them. They could not go to the temple or live with their families. It was a lonely and painful life.

But this man heard about Jesus. He believed Jesus could do something no one else could do. He knelt down in front of Jesus right there in the crowd. He said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." He did not demand a healing. He trusted Jesus completely, asking only if Jesus was willing.

Jesus did something shocking. He reached out his hand and touched the man. No one touched a leper. But Jesus touched him without fear. Then Jesus spoke powerful words: "I am willing. Be clean." Immediately, the man's leprosy disappeared. His skin became completely healthy, as if he had never been sick. Jesus showed that God's power is greater than any disease. He also showed that God's love reaches everyone, even those whom others push away.

Jesus told the man to go show himself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded. That way everyone would know the man was truly healed. This miracle proved that Jesus is God's Son, sent to bring healing and hope to a broken world.

Old Testament Connection

In the Old Testament, God gave Moses detailed laws about skin diseases in Leviticus 13-14. People with leprosy had to live outside the camp and cry out "Unclean." If someone was healed, a priest had to inspect them and offer sacrifices. These laws taught Israel about holiness and the seriousness of sin. But Jesus did something no Old Testament priest could do. He touched the unclean man without becoming unclean himself. Instead, his holiness and power made the man clean. Jesus showed he is greater than the law. He came to heal not just bodies but also hearts, fulfilling God's promise to send a Savior who would restore what sin had broken.

  • How do you think the leper felt when Jesus touched him? How would you feel if Jesus touched you with healing?
  • Jesus said "I am willing." What does that tell you about God's heart toward people who are hurting or sick?
  • Why was it such a big deal that Jesus had his own authority when he taught? How is that different from other teachers?

  • Is there someone in your life who feels left out or "unclean" because of how others treat them? How can you show them Jesus' love this week?
  • When you pray for healing or help, do you trust that Jesus is willing? What can you do to grow your trust like the leper's?
  • Jesus had authority because he is God's Son. How can you listen to Jesus' words and obey them at home, at school, or with friends?

Jesus' Healing Touch Handprint Craft

How to Make the Jesus' Healing Touch Handprint Craft:

  1. Pour a small amount of paint onto a paper plate. Use a brush to spread a thin layer on the palm and fingers of one hand.
  2. Press your painted hand firmly onto the construction paper to make a handprint. This represents Jesus' hand reaching out to heal.
  3. Wash your hands with a baby wipe or soap and water.
  4. After the paint dries, use markers to write the words "I am willing. Be clean." (Matthew 8:3) at the top or bottom of the paper.
  5. Decorate around the handprint with drawings of hearts, stars, or crosses to show God's healing love.

Effective Teaching Techniques

  • Before the story, briefly explain what leprosy was in Bible times (a serious skin disease that made people isolated). Use simple, non-scary words.
  • When you read the part where Jesus touches the leper, pause and ask the children to imagine being the leper. How would their skin feel after being healed?
  • For the craft, have extra baby wipes and paper towels ready. Younger children may need help painting their hand evenly. You can also trace a hand outline instead of using paint if you prefer less mess.
  • To help memorize the verse, have the children say "I am willing" while touching their heart, then "Be clean" while pretending to wash their arms. Repeat several times with different volumes (whisper, loud, robot voice).
