John the Baptist Prepares the Way
(Matthew 3:1-17)
Have you ever been chosen to do a very important job? A long, long time ago, God had a very special job for a man named John the Baptist. John lived in the desert, wore clothes made of camel's hair, and ate locusts and wild honey. That might sound strange to us, but God had prepared John for a big mission.
John traveled all around the Jordan River, and he shouted a message to everyone: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!" John told people to turn away from their sins and be baptized in the river to show that their hearts were changing. Crowds of people came to hear him. They confessed their sins, and John baptized them in the muddy water of the Jordan.
One day, some religious leaders called Pharisees and Sadducees came to watch. They thought they were good enough because they followed many rules. But John saw right through their pride. He called them a "brood of vipers" and warned them to show true fruit of a changed life. John said, "Someone more powerful than me is coming. I am not even worthy to carry his sandals." John was talking about Jesus.
Then, on an ordinary day at the river, Jesus of Nazareth came to be baptized by John. John was shocked. He said, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?" But Jesus answered, "Let it be so now. It is right for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." So John agreed.
Jesus went down into the water, and John baptized him. As Jesus came up out of the water, the sky opened! The Holy Spirit came down like a dove and rested on Jesus. Then a voice from heaven spoke: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." It was God the Father speaking! Everyone at the river saw and heard something amazing. Jesus, the perfect Son of God, had no sin to confess. But he stepped into the water anyway, standing right alongside the sinners he came to save. He called it "fulfilling all righteousness," meaning he was doing everything God required to rescue his people. And when he came up out of that water, heaven itself confirmed who he was.
A Curious Question
Why did Jesus, who was perfect and never did anything wrong, choose to be baptized just like sinners who were turning away from their bad choices?
Old Testament Connection
Hundreds of years before John the Baptist, the prophet Isaiah wrote about a voice crying in the desert: "Prepare the way for the Lord!" That was John's job. Malachi also promised that a messenger would come before the Messiah to get people ready. God had been planning this moment since the beginning. John was the final prophet before Jesus, the long-awaited Savior who would rescue people from their sins.

1. John the Baptist lived simply in the desert and said hard truths to people. What does his example teach us about being brave for God?
2. Why do you think God showed the Holy Spirit as a dove and spoke from heaven at Jesus' baptism?
3. How can we "prepare our hearts" for Jesus today, just like John prepared the way back then?
So What? What Can I Do?
When you feel nervous to do the right thing, remember John's courage. You can pray and ask God for bravery to share his love.
When you make a mistake, remember that baptism shows a fresh start. You can say sorry to God and ask him to help you change.
When you wonder if God is proud of you, remember Jesus' baptism. Because of Jesus, God calls you his beloved child too.

Dear Father, thank you for sending John the Baptist to get people ready for Jesus. Thank you that at Jesus' baptism, you showed us the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all together. Help us to listen to your Son and follow him every day. Amen.

Dove Descending Craft
Materials Checklist:
How to Make the Dove Descending Craft:
- Cut a dove shape from the white paper plate. Fold it in half to make wings.
- Glue white feathers onto the dove's wings and tail.
- On the blue construction paper, draw a wavy line for the Jordan River near the bottom.
- Glue cotton balls above the river to look like clouds.
- Tape or glue the dove above the river, coming down from the clouds.
- Write on the paper: "This is my Son, whom I love" (Matthew 3:17).
Effective Teaching Techniques
For younger kids, pre-cut the dove shapes and have cotton balls ready. Use a fan to blow the paper doves gently to show the Holy Spirit moving. For a memory game, have kids act out the three persons of the Trinity: point to Father (up), cross arms for Son (Jesus), and flap hands like dove wings for Holy Spirit.
