The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
(Matthew 20:1-16)
Jesus told a story to help his friends understand something surprising about God's kingdom. He said, "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard."
The landowner agreed to pay the workers the usual amount for a full day's work. So they went into the vineyard to work. A few hours later, about nine in the morning, the landowner saw more workers standing in the marketplace with nowhere to work. He told them, "You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you what is right." So they went.
The landowner went out again about noon and at three in the afternoon and did the same thing. Finally, about five in the afternoon—just one hour before quitting time—he found more workers standing around. He asked, "Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing?" They said, "Because no one hired us." So the landowner told them, "You also go and work in my vineyard."
When evening came, the landowner told his foreman, "Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first." The workers who had been hired at five o'clock came forward. Each one received a full day's pay. The workers who had been hired first expected to receive more. But they also received a full day's pay.
When they got it, they complained to the landowner. "These last workers worked only one hour," they said, "but you made them equal to us who worked all day in the scorching heat."
The landowner answered one of them, "Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for the usual wage? Take your pay and go. I want to give the workers who were hired last the same as I gave you. Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?"
Jesus finished his story with these words: "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."
This story teaches us that God's grace is not like a paycheck. God does not give us what we earn. He gives us a gift we could never deserve. And that is wonderful news for everyone.
A Curious Question
Why did the workers who worked all day get upset when the landowner gave the same gift to everyone?
Old Testament Connection
This story reminds us of how God's covenant promises have always been about grace, not earnings. From the very beginning, God chose Abraham not because Abraham was perfect, but because God loved him. Later, the prophet Jonah got angry when God showed mercy to the people of Nineveh—just like the workers who complained. God told Jonah, "Should I not be concerned about that great city?" God's kindness has always surprised people who think they deserve more than others.

1. Why do you think the workers who worked all day felt angry? Was the landowner unfair?
2. What does this story tell us about how God gives out his gifts of love and forgiveness?
3. Have you ever felt like you worked harder than someone else but got the same reward? How did that feel, and what does Jesus want you to remember?
So What? What Can I Do?
When you feel jealous that someone else got something good, ask yourself: Am I upset because something unfair happened, or because I want more than they have?
When you do something kind for someone, remember that God sees your heart—not just your hours of work.
Thank God this week for giving you gifts you did not earn, like sunshine, family, and forgiveness.

Surprise Gift Envelopes

How to Make the Surprise Gift Envelopes:
- Cut a piece of construction paper to fit inside the envelope.
- On the paper, draw a picture of something God gives us that we do not earn (like love, family, or a sunny day).
- Write or copy the memory verse: "Or are you envious because I am generous?" (Matthew 20:15b)
- Decorate the outside of the envelope with stickers and your name.
- Put your drawing inside the envelope and seal it.
- Give your envelope to someone in your family this week to show them God's surprise gift of grace.
Effective Teaching Techniques
For younger kids, act out the story using play coins and assigning different children to be the "workers" hired at different times. Hand out the same number of coins to everyone at the end. Watch their reactions—then talk about those feelings openly.
For older kids, ask: "If God paid us exactly what we deserved, would that be good news or bad news? Why?" This helps them see that grace is better than fairness.
