God Protects His Son Jesus
(Matthew 2:13-23)

After the wise men left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel said, "Get up! Take the baby Jesus and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you to return, because King Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

Joseph woke up and obeyed immediately. That very night, he got Mary and the baby Jesus and left for Egypt. They stayed there until King Herod died. This happened to make a prophecy from the Old Testament come true. God said through the prophet Hosea, "I called my Son out of Egypt."

King Herod was very angry when he realized the wise men had not returned to him. In his rage, he gave a terrible order. He sent soldiers to Bethlehem and all the nearby areas. They killed every baby boy who was two years old or younger. This was a sad day, just like the prophet Jeremiah had written: "A voice was heard in Ramah, crying and loud sadness. Rachel is crying for her children. She refuses to be comforted, because they are no more."

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph again in a dream while he was still in Egypt. The angel said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel. The people who wanted to kill the child are dead." So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary, and went back to Israel.

But when Joseph heard that Herod's son Archelaus was ruling in Judea, he was afraid to go there. God warned him in another dream, so Joseph went to the area of Galilee instead. He made his home in a town called Nazareth. This was also a fulfillment of prophecy. The prophets had said, "He will be called a Nazarene." God guided Joseph every step of the way to keep Jesus safe.

Why do you think God chose to protect Jesus through dreams and a long journey to Egypt instead of stopping King Herod with a miracle right away?

Old Testament Connection

This story is filled with Old Testament prophecies. First, God said through the prophet Hosea, "Out of Egypt I called my son." This connects Jesus to God's people Israel, who were also called out of Egypt. Second, the sadness in Bethlehem matches Jeremiah's words about Rachel crying for her children. Third, Jesus growing up in Nazareth fulfills many messianic prophecies that said the Messiah would be despised and rejected, just like people from Nazareth were looked down upon. God planned every detail long before Jesus was born.

Discussion Questions

  • Joseph obeyed the angel's message immediately, even though it meant a dangerous journey in the middle of the night. What helps you obey God right away even when it's hard?
  • God protected Jesus in a quiet way through dreams and travel instead of a loud miracle. How does God sometimes protect you in quiet ways that you might not notice at first?
  • King Herod's evil plan could not stop God's promises. Why is it comforting to know that no bad person or situation can ever ruin what God has planned?

  • When have you felt afraid or worried, and how did God help you through that time like He helped Joseph and Mary?
  • Joseph listened carefully for God's voice in dreams. What are some ways you can listen for God's guidance today, like through Bible reading, prayer, or wise adults?
  • God had a special plan to save Jesus. How can you trust that God has a special plan for your life even when things seem confusing or scary?

Dear Father, thank you for protecting Jesus and keeping him safe from harm. Thank you that you watch over us too, even when we don't see it. Help us to obey you like Joseph did, even when your plans seem surprising. Give us courage to trust your guidance in dreams, through your Word, and in our hearts. We love you, Lord. Amen.

Dream Journey Map

How to Make the Dream Journey Map:

  1. Crumple a brown paper bag to make it look like old map paper, then flatten it gently.
  2. Draw a large circle for Bethlehem at the bottom right corner of the map.
  3. Draw a long winding path with a marker going from Bethlehem across the map to a pyramid shape labeled "Egypt" on the left side.
  4. Draw a second path going back from Egypt to a house shape labeled "Nazareth" at the top of the map.
  5. Glue cotton balls along the paths to look like clouds, showing that God guided Joseph in dreams.
  6. Add star stickers to show how God's light led the way, just like the star led the wise men.

Effective Teaching Techniques

  • Map Movement: Before the lesson, tape a simple floor map showing Bethlehem, Egypt, and Nazareth. Let kids walk the journey as you tell the story. This kinesthetic activity helps them remember the geography and Joseph's obedience.
  • Dream Dramatization: Have children close their eyes while you whisper the angel's message. Then say "wake up" and let them act out packing quickly. This builds empathy for Joseph's sudden calling.
  • Younger Adjustments: For preschool kids, skip the prophecy connections. Focus on the simple truth: God told Joseph what to do, and Joseph obeyed. Use hand motions for "dream" (hands under head) and "go" (walking fingers).
