The Glorious Mountain Top
(Matthew 17:1-9)
One day, Jesus took three of his closest friends—Peter, James, and John—up a very high mountain. It was a long, hard climb. The sun was shining, and the path was rocky. The disciples didn't know why Jesus wanted to go up there all alone, but they trusted him and followed.
When they reached the top, something amazing and wonderful happened. Right in front of their eyes, Jesus began to change. His face shone like the bright sun, and his clothes became dazzling white—whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them. The disciples had never seen anything like it. They rubbed their eyes and stared in awe.
Then two more people appeared beside Jesus. They were Moses and Elijah, two of the most important men from the Old Testament who had lived hundreds of years before. Moses was the great leader who gave God's law, and Elijah was the mighty prophet who spoke God's truth. And here they were, talking with Jesus on the mountain top.
Peter was so excited he didn't know what to say. "Lord, it is good for us to be here!" he blurted out. "If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter meant well, but he was missing the point. He wanted to capture the moment and stay there forever.
While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them. It was not like any ordinary cloud. This cloud was the very presence of God the Father. And from the cloud, a voice boomed out, "This is my beloved Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"
The three disciples were terrified. They fell facedown on the ground, shaking with fear. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said gently. "Don't be afraid." When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus alone, standing there with them just as before.
As they walked back down the mountain, Jesus told them, "Don't tell anyone what you saw here until I am raised from the dead." They obeyed, but they wondered what he meant by "raised from the dead." This glorious moment on the mountain was a tiny peek into who Jesus really is: the Son of God, greater than Moses or Elijah, more glorious than the sun, and worthy of all our listening and trust.

Why do you think God the Father said, "Listen to him" about Jesus, instead of saying "Listen to Moses and Elijah"?
Old Testament Connection
This amazing event connects directly to God's promises in the Old Testament. Moses represented the Law, and Elijah represented the Prophets. Together, they showed that the entire Old Testament points to Jesus. When God said, "Listen to him," he was fulfilling the prophecy from Deuteronomy 18:15, where Moses said God would raise up a prophet like him—and that prophet is Jesus. Also, the Mountain of Transfiguration reminds us of Mount Sinai, where Moses met with God. But here, Jesus shines brighter than Moses ever did, showing that he is greater than the Law and the Prophets.

Dear Father, thank you for showing us on the mountain that Jesus is your beloved Son. Help us to listen to him every day, even when we are scared or confused. When we feel afraid, remind us that Jesus touches us and says, "Don't be afraid." We love you. Amen.

Shining Face Mountain Scene

How to Make the Shining Face Mountain Scene:
- Cut brown construction paper into a mountain shape and glue it onto the white cardstock.
- Draw a small circle near the top of the mountain for Jesus' face.
- Glue yellow tissue paper squares all around the face to show his shining light.
- Draw three tiny stick figures below the mountain for Peter, James, and John.
- Write at the top: "Listen to him" (Matthew 17:5).
Effective Teaching Techniques
For younger children, pre-cut the mountain shapes and tissue squares. Before the story, ask the class to stand up and pretend to climb a mountain with you. Use a flashlight to shine on your face during the transfiguration part to help them visualize the brightness. For a quieter moment, turn off the lights and use a battery-operated candle inside a cotton ball cloud when God speaks. This helps capture their wonder without fear.
