An Angel Visits Joseph
(Matthew 1:18-25)
A young woman named Mary was engaged to be married to a good man named Joseph. In those days, engagement was very serious. It was almost like being married, even though the couple did not live together yet. Mary was going to become Joseph's wife, and Joseph was excited to start a family with her.
But then Joseph learned something that shocked him. Mary was going to have a baby. Joseph knew the baby was not his. He felt confused and hurt. He did not want to disgrace Mary in public, but he also knew he could not marry her. So Joseph made a quiet plan to end the engagement. He thought this was the kindest thing to do.
While Joseph was thinking about all of this, he fell asleep. And in a dream, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. The angel said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. What is growing in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Joseph listened carefully to every word. The angel explained that this was exactly what the prophet Isaiah had written long ago: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" - which means "God with us." God himself was coming to live with his people. This baby would not be an ordinary child. He would be the Savior.
When Joseph woke up, he did not wait. He did not argue or question. He obeyed the angel's message right away. He took Mary home as his wife. But he did not live with her as husband and wife until after the baby was born. When the son arrived, Joseph gave him the name Jesus, just as the angel had commanded.
Think about what Joseph gave up. He gave up his good reputation. People would talk and whisper about why Mary had a baby so soon. Joseph gave up his own plans. He had probably dreamed of a normal wedding and a normal family. But God asked him to do something unusual and difficult. Joseph obeyed anyway, because he trusted God.
This story shows us a wonderful truth. God enters into our messy, confusing situations. Mary and Joseph faced a problem that had no easy answer. But God sent an angel with a message of hope. God did not leave them alone. And God sent Jesus to be "God with us" - not just for Mary and Joseph, but for everyone. Jesus came to save people from their sins. That is the best news the world has ever heard.
A Curious Question
Why did God send an angel to Joseph in a dream instead of just telling him directly or writing the message in the sky?
Old Testament Connection
The angel quoted the prophet Isaiah from Isaiah 7:14. That prophecy was given more than 700 years before Jesus was born. God promised through Isaiah that a virgin would give birth to a son named Immanuel. Matthew shows that Jesus is the fulfillment of that ancient prophecy. This is part of the larger covenant promise that God would send a rescuer to save his people and live among them.

Joseph's Dream Pillow Craft

How to Make the Joseph's Dream Pillow Craft:
- Cut two identical rectangle or square shapes from the white felt to make the front and back of your pillow.
- On one piece of felt, use a marker to draw a simple picture of an angel or write the word "Jesus."
- Glue three sides of the two felt pieces together, leaving one side open.
- Stuff the pillow with cotton balls or fiberfill until it is soft and puffy.
- Glue the open side closed.
- Use this pillow to remind you that God can speak to us and guide us, just as he guided Joseph in a dream.
Effective Teaching Techniques
For younger children, pre-cut the felt pieces and apply glue dots ahead of time. Let them focus on the drawing and stuffing. For older kids, discuss other times in the Bible when God spoke through dreams (Joseph in Genesis, Daniel, Solomon). Keep the conversation sensitive for children from non-traditional families by focusing on Joseph's obedience and trust rather than the specifics of engagement customs.
