Stand Strong in the Fire
(Daniel 3)
King Nebuchadnezzar was the most powerful ruler in the world. He ruled over the huge Babylonian Empire from his grand palace. But the king had a problem. He wanted everyone to look at him and praise him. So he made a giant golden statue. It stood ninety feet tall and nine feet wide, as tall as a nine-story building. The king set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.
The king sent a message to all his officials: satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and every other leader in the province. They all came to stand before the golden statue. A herald shouted, "When you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the golden statue. Anyone who does not will be thrown into a blazing fiery furnace."
So the music played, and everyone bowed down. Everyone except three young men: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were Israelites who had been taken from their homeland and brought to Babylon. They knew God's command, "You shall have no other gods before me," and they would not bow to a statue made by human hands, no matter what the king commanded.
Some astrologers noticed and ran to the king. "These three Jews refuse to serve your gods," they said. King Nebuchadnezzar flew into a rage and gave them one more chance. "If you do not worship the statue when you hear the music, you will be thrown into the furnace. What god can save you from my power?"
The three young men answered with bold faith. "We have no need to answer you about this," they said. "Our God, whom we serve, is able to deliver us from the burning furnace. He will rescue us from your hand. But even if He does not, we still will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue." They trusted God no matter what happened to them.
The king's face turned purple with anger. He commanded the furnace to be heated seven times hotter than usual and ordered his strongest soldiers to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and throw them in. The fire was so hot it killed the soldiers who threw them, and the three men fell into the furnace, still tied up.
Suddenly the king jumped to his feet. "Did we not throw three men into the fire?" he asked. His advisers said yes. "But I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed," the king said. "The fourth looks like a son of the gods." He called out, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out." They walked out completely unharmed. Their clothes had not burned, their hair was not singed, and they did not even smell like smoke.
The king praised God: "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel and delivered his servants who trusted in him." He promoted them to even higher positions in Babylon. God had shown that His power is greater than any king or furnace.

Jesus Connection
The fourth figure walking in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego was a heavenly visitor sent by God. Many Bible teachers believe this was the Son of God appearing before He came to earth as Jesus. In John 1, we learn that Jesus is the Word who was with God in the beginning and who created all things. Just as God sent this heavenly figure to be with the three men in the fire, God sent Jesus to be with us in our darkest moments. Jesus walked through the fire of death on the cross and rose again so that we never have to face our trials alone. He is with us always.

Fiery Furnace Diorama
Children will create a diorama showing the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and the fourth figure inside. This craft helps kids visualize the story and remember that God is with us in our trials.
Materials Checklist:
- Cut a large window in one side of the box so you can see inside. This is the front of your furnace.
- Tear the tissue paper into strips and crumple them into small balls to look like flames.
- Glue the tissue paper flames to the inside bottom and sides of the box, layering yellow, orange, and red to look like a blazing fire.
- Color four craft sticks with markers. Use three of them to represent Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Use the fourth to represent the angel or heavenly figure.
- Stand the craft sticks up inside the box among the tissue paper flames and glue them in place.
- Display your diorama and use it to tell the story of God's power and protection.
Effective Teaching Techniques
For Younger Children: Focus on the visual of the furnace and the four figures. Use hand motions as you tell the story. Let the children pretend to be Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego standing strong. Encourage them to shout "No!" when the music plays in the story. Let them get loud here, it helps the moment stick.
Prep Shortcut: Pre-cut the box windows and pre-tear the tissue paper before class. Have each child's craft sticks pre-colored or use pre-made stick figures. This saves time and keeps little hands busy with the gluing and arranging part.
