Daniel and the Lions' Den
(Daniel 6)
Darius the Mede became the new king over Babylon. He chose 120 governors to rule the kingdom, and over them he placed three high officials. Daniel was one of these three. He was so faithful that the king planned to put him in charge of the whole kingdom. But the other governors and officials grew jealous. They watched Daniel carefully, hoping to find a mistake or a way to accuse him, but they could not find anything wrong. Daniel was honest and trustworthy in everything he did.
So the jealous men made a plan. They knew Daniel prayed to God three times every day. They went to King Darius and said, "King, live forever. All the governors and officials agree that you should make a new law. No one may pray to any god or person except to you for 30 days. Anyone who breaks this law will be thrown into the lions' den. Please sign the law so it cannot be changed." King Darius liked the idea and signed it, not realizing the men were trying to trap Daniel.
When Daniel heard about the new law, he went home to his upstairs room, where the windows were open facing toward Jerusalem. Just as he always did, he knelt down and prayed to God. He did not try to hide. He knew the law was signed, but he would not stop praying to the Lord. The jealous men rushed to the king. "Did you not sign a law that no one may pray to any god except to you for 30 days?" they asked. "Daniel prays to his God three times a day. He has broken your law."
King Darius was very upset. He had been tricked, and he tried all day to save Daniel, but the law could not be changed. At sunset, the king had to give the order. Daniel was thrown into the lions' den. "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you," the king said. Then a stone was rolled over the opening, and the king sealed it with his own ring. King Darius went back to his palace and could not eat or sleep all night.
Early in the morning, the king hurried to the lions' den and called out with a sad voice, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God been able to rescue you?" Daniel answered, "O king, live forever. My God sent his angel to shut the lions' mouths. They have not hurt me." The king was overjoyed and had Daniel lifted out of the den. There was not a scratch on him. The king then threw the jealous men into the lions' den, along with their families, and the lions crushed them before they hit the floor. King Darius wrote a new law commanding everyone to fear and respect the God of Daniel, because he is the living God who rescues and saves.

Why would Daniel keep praying with his windows wide open, even when he knew the lions' den was waiting for him below?
Jesus Connection
Daniel was thrown into a pit of hungry lions because he would not stop praying to God. In the same way, Jesus was arrested and put to death because He would not stop being the Son of God. Both Daniel and Jesus were innocent, yet they faced terrible punishment. But God did not leave them there. Daniel was lifted out of the den alive, and Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day. The angel who shut the lions' mouths points forward to the angels who rolled away the stone from Jesus' tomb. Just as Daniel's rescue proved God is the living God, Jesus' resurrection proves He is the Lord of life over death. (See Matthew 28.)

Craft or Activity
Lion's Den Diorama
Children will create a small diorama of Daniel in the lions' den with an angel shutting the lions' mouths, showing God's protection.
Materials Checklist:
- Cover the outside of the shoe box with brown paper to look like a rocky den.
- Color and cut out the lion figures and Daniel. Glue them inside the box standing up.
- Cut a small strip of yellow paper for the angel and glue it near the lions' mouths.
- Cut a circle from the gray foam to serve as the stone that sealed the den.
- Glue the stone over the opening of the box so it can be lifted to show Daniel safe inside.
- Write "Daniel 6" on the outside of your diorama to remember God's rescue.
Effective Teaching Techniques
For Younger Children: Use stuffed animal lions to act out the story. Let them cover their eyes while you hide a Daniel figure inside a box, then open it to show he is safe. This makes the rescue concrete and memorable. Pause before you open the box to build the suspense.
Prep Shortcut: Before class, pre-cut the box openings and have the paper figures ready to color. This saves time and lets younger kids focus on gluing and decorating rather than cutting complex shapes.
Classroom Management: When discussing the jealous men, keep the tone matter-of-fact and avoid dwelling on the violence. Instead, emphasize Daniel's calm trust and the king's discovery that God is the living God.
For Older Kids: Challenge them to rewrite the law from King Darius in their own words, then discuss how Daniel's obedience to God put him in a position where God's power could be shown.
